Otoplasty Surgery

What is Earlobe Repair?

Otoplasty, also known as ear surgery or ear shaping, is a reconstructive surgical procedure that can improve the appearance of the ears. Patients often turn to Dr. Lo for cosmetic ear surgery to reduce the size of sagging or enlarged earlobes which is a common sign of aging. Trauma or injury, heavy earrings, or ear gauges can stretch and damage the earlobes leading to the need for cosmetic repair. Ear lobe repair and reduction is a unique procedure designed to restore a natural shape and youthful look to the ear. As an expert in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, Dr. Lo can help patients improve the look of their ears with his specialized techniques in otoplasty. Earlobe repair and reduction is safe and effective for men and women of all ages.

Earlobe Repair

Soft earlobe tissue can easily become torn from years of wearing heavy earrings, trauma, improper piercing, or from gauging and stretching earlobes. Dr. Lo can repair damaged earlobes with his reconstructive cosmetic surgery techniques at our in-office surgery center. Most earlobe repair procedures are done using local anesthesia, but light sedation is available if patients prefer. This is a delicate process which requires precise removal of the excess skin, while creating small flaps of skin to redistribute and contour the earlobe to a more natural shape. Dr. Lo will use small sutures to secure placement of the reconstructed ear. The earlobe repair procedure takes less than an hour.

Earlobe Reduction

As we age, sagging of the skin, wrinkles, and volume loss can occur anywhere on the face and body, including your ears. Earlobes can stretch and lengthen, giving them an elongated and aged appearance. Earlobe reduction is done to shorten the length and restore its youthful look. Earlobe repair procedures are typically done using local anesthesia, although light sedation is available if patients prefer. Dr. Lo will work to carefully remove excess skin, while redraping the tissue and reshaping the earlobe giving it a more youthful and natural appearance. Dr. Lo will use small sutures to secure placement of the rejuvenated ear tissue, the entire procedure takes less than an hour.

Earlobe Recovery

After your Earlobe Surgery the treated area may feel tender and swollen but many patients are comfortable returning to most day-to-day activities immediately. You may ice the area and it is recommended to keep your head elevated while you sleep for the first few days. It is important to keep the ears clean and dry during the healing process, and no strenuous activity or exercise for 2-weeks. You may experience numbness, skin discoloration, swelling and itching as the incisions heal. The sutures are removed after 1-week and result in minimal scarring. Ears can be re-pierced after 2-3 months.
